Build Expanded Paraphrase

Click within the CBC to insert an expansion. A textbox will appear. Type in (or copy into) the textbox and push ESC to cancel or ENTER to save.

Alternatively, you may edit the CBC/insertions alternation directly at Data/5/expanded-paraphrase.json for a final draft. If you're viewing a paraphrase from the wiki, save it as a draft and then modify.

If there is an extra space between two parts...

, you'll need to modify the json file directly. For example, to enable plots:

	{
		"verse": "1",
		"cbc": "plot",
		"Index": 6,
		"suppressFollowingSpace": true
	},
	{
		"verse": "1",
		"insertion": "s",
		"WordsBefore": 6,
		"Index": 7
	},

If a Google discourse sheet exists...

You may import the Expanded Paraphrase from the sheet by following these instructions.

Prepare the discourse sheet

  1. Open the Discourse Google sheet for this Psalm.
  2. Go to the tab named "Public-Text" (which is likely already made). If it doesn't exist, follow these instructions (you'll need it all by the end of this).

Prepare

To enable this, you must:

  1. Open the Discourse Google sheet for this Psalm.
  2. Add a new tab named "Public-Text" (the name isn't actually critical)
  3. Use as the formula in the top-left cell: ='Discourse Master Sheet'!A:A (or whatever the appropriate code is to select the first column of the master sheet).
  4. Drag the formula over to Column C and down as far as needed to get all the rows.
  5. File > Share > Publish to Web
  6. Instead of Entire Document, choose sheet Public-Text
  7. Instead of Web Page, choose Tab-separated values.
  8. Copy the link starting from after /d/e until before the &single, e.g. https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/e/2PACX-1vTeE2dD9gc2v4rckm23VfBCDdpuLirI3DOxLQE10a2UHWl3puz8wPPCJ2wgBftP4VYqadCPb2pWOUwi/pub?gid=168152279&single=true&output=tsv
  9. Edit the base Psalm page, e.g. Psalm 19
  10. Add the DiscourseSheet property like this:
{{ResourceSite
|DiscourseSheet=2PACX-1vTeE2dD9gc2v4rckm23VfBCDdpuLirI3DOxLQE10a2UHWl3puz8wPPCJ2wgBftP4VYqadCPb2pWOUwi/pub?gid=168152279
|Banner Image=Psalm 19 banner image.jpg
  1. In D2, type "Expanded Paraphrase" as the new header. (This, like the one below, will be used by code to ensure this is what is intended.)
  2. In E2, type "Expanded Paraphrase as JSON" as the new header.

Get the spreadsheet ID

  1. Now you'll need to save the Google spreadsheet ID. This will be used to generate the JSON within the Google environment. (The Google sheet URL, which is likely already stored, will be used to extract the JSON into the Resource Site.)
  2. From the URL, copy the link starting from after /d until before the /edit?, e.g. https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/5Ni8QMdjRtxVFj_eAcSD5kgnWmoNTLMZy0zvykIT8ku0/edit?gid=702545086#gid=702545086

Save the spreadsheet ID

(This step can be skipped if you'll only ever manuallly populate this; this goal permits us to bulk populate all discourse spreadsheets.)

  1. Edit the base Psalm page, e.g. Psalm 59
  2. Add the DiscourseSheetID property like this:
{{ResourceSite
|DiscourseSheetID=5Ni8QMdjRtxVFj_eAcSD5kgnWmoNTLMZy0zvykIT8ku0
|DiscourseSheet=2PACX-5vS309bCf4RkDjHEczGiDnZtOACqV94-DLwI_bYlzt5hugBM25ddPLVwaRETsZ9SyB46-7SpcGm3U8bX/pub?gid=702545086
}}

Populate the Public-Text sheet

  1. Actually extract the bold & italics from the main sheet into the Public-Text sheet. This involves running an Apps Script. First open this: https://script.google.com/u/0/home/projects/57TAMP5KpcaMTXBf5qS0C-mflnt-5srgJTWns6bLRD_l6eNSj9zy4Bxzc/edit.
  2. Now add your discourse sheet id to the end of the list of spreadsheetIDs at the top, remembering to enclose it in double quotation marks and ensuring everything is comma-delimited.
  3. At the top of the page, ensure "extractBoldFromMultipleSpreadsheets" is in the menu bar.
  4. Click Run.
  5. If the Execution Log at the bottom of the page doesn't show "Execution started" and then "Execution completed" then ask Elizabeth for help...

Extract the Public-Text sheet to the Resource Site

Follow the above instructions and refresh the page. The Discourse Sheet properties have not yet been set.

Use the Save current draft button at the bottom of the page to save.

לַמְנַצֵּ֥חַ אֶֽל־הַנְּחִיל֗וֹת מִזְמ֥וֹר לְדָוִֽד׃ 1 + For the director, on the flutes, a psalm by David.+++
2 + Listen to my words which I am about to present to you in this psalm , YHWH. Listen closely, so that you Understand my murmuring.+++
3 + I am in distress. Pay attention to the sound of my cry for help and deliver me from my distress. You are my king and my God with whom I, as your vassal king, am in a privileged relationship. Listen, for I have not sought help from anyone else. Instead, I am praying to you.+
4 + YHWH, anytime I have a legal case to make against my enemies, who cause me distress, I bring it before you, because you are my king and the king is responsible for deciding legal cases. In the morning, the time when the sun, a symbol of justice, rises to expose the darkness and judicial proceedings usually commence, you hear my voice. In the morning, I arrange my words into a legal case for you and wait expectantly for your response and decision, like a watchman standing watch atop a citadel in eager expectation of what is to come.+
5 + I am now bringing case before you, and here is the first part of my argument. You should decide in my favour For you are not a god pleased with wickedness. Therefore, Evil like a nomad seeking to reside for a while under your provision and protection will not sojourn with you. And so, my enemies, who are wicked, should not experience your pleasure, provision or protection.+
6 + Boasters will not stand before your eyes, because You hate all workers of evil, and my enemies are boastful workers of evil.+
7 + You will destroy speakers of falsehood. YHWH acts in this way, because YHWH abhors a person of bloodshed and treachery. My enemies are characterised by these very things: falsehood, bloodshed, and treachery. Therefore, if you are true to your character, YHWH, you will destroy them.+
8 + But You have made a covenant with me, YHWH, and you are always true to your covenant promises. Therefore, whereas my enemies cannot be in your presence, I, in the greatness of your loyalty, will go to your house, the place, in Jerusalem, where you are worshipped. I am currently away from your house , and so I am away from your special presence. My enemies within my own kingdom have rebelled and driven me into exile. I long to be in your presence again and to look again upon the ark of your covenant. Surely, you will bring me back, and I will bow down toward your holy temple your royal residence in fear of you.+
9 + YHWH, you are righteous, and you always act right by your covenant. As I seek to return to your house in Jerusalem, lead me in your righteousness. My enemies prevent me from returning safely. So, I need you to lead me back because of my enemies. Make your way straight before me.+
10 + Here is the second part of my argument for why you should declare my enemies guilty: Not only do you hate evildoers in general, but my enemies are evildoers. For there is nothing true in his mouth. Their speech can't be trusted because , Their inner parts are disaster. Their throat an organ of speech is an open tomb which they fill with their dead victims . They make their tongues deceitful.+
11 + Having heard my case for why my enemies are guilty, Make them bear their guilt, God. They have, in violence, deceit, and treachery, designed plots against me. Let them fall from their designs. They have driven me out of the land, away from your presence, but it is they who deserve to be driven from the land. Drive them out because of the greatness of their crimes, for by rebelling against me, your anointed king, they have rebelled against you.+
12 + And as a result of your justice being executed, your realm purged of evildoers and your anointed king restored, let all those who take refuge in you as their king who have remained loyal to me and to you, and who will live in your protective presence rejoice. Let them shout forever, and may you shelter them, and let those who love you exult in you.+
13 + For you as the righteous king and judge of all bless the righteous one, the one whose behavior conforms to your requirements, and not the wicked one. YHWH, like a large shield which gives protection in battle, you surround him with favour.+
