Psalm 109/Expanded Paraphrase
Build Expanded Paraphrase
Click within the CBC to insert an expansion. A textbox will appear. Type in (or copy into) the textbox and push ESC to cancel or ENTER to save.
Alternatively, you may edit the CBC/insertions alternation directly at Data/109/expanded-paraphrase.json for a final draft. If you're viewing a paraphrase from the wiki, save it as a draft and then modify.
If there is an extra space between two parts...
, you'll need to modify the json file directly. For example, to enable plots:
{
"verse": "1",
"cbc": "plot",
"Index": 6,
"suppressFollowingSpace": true
},
{
"verse": "1",
"insertion": "s",
"WordsBefore": 6,
"Index": 7
},
If a Google discourse sheet exists...
You may import the Expanded Paraphrase from the sheet by following these instructions.
Prepare the discourse sheet
- Open the Discourse Google sheet for this Psalm.
- Go to the tab named "Public-Text" (which is likely already made). If it doesn't exist, follow these instructions (you'll need it all by the end of this).
Prepare
To enable this, you must:
- Open the Discourse Google sheet for this Psalm.
- Add a new tab named "Public-Text" (the name isn't actually critical)
- Use as the formula in the top-left cell:
='Discourse Master Sheet'!A:A(or whatever the appropriate code is to select the first column of the master sheet). - Drag the formula over to Column C and down as far as needed to get all the rows.
File > Share > Publish to Web- Instead of Entire Document, choose sheet
Public-Text - Instead of Web Page, choose
Tab-separated values. - Copy the link starting from after /d/e until before the &single, e.g. https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/e/
2PACX-1vTeE2dD9gc2v4rckm23VfBCDdpuLirI3DOxLQE10a2UHWl3puz8wPPCJ2wgBftP4VYqadCPb2pWOUwi/pub?gid=168152279&single=true&output=tsv - Edit the base Psalm page, e.g.
Psalm 19 - Add the
DiscourseSheetproperty like this:
{{ResourceSite
|DiscourseSheet=2PACX-1vTeE2dD9gc2v4rckm23VfBCDdpuLirI3DOxLQE10a2UHWl3puz8wPPCJ2wgBftP4VYqadCPb2pWOUwi/pub?gid=168152279
|Banner Image=Psalm 19 banner image.jpg
- In
D2, type "Expanded Paraphrase" as the new header. (This, like the one below, will be used by code to ensure this is what is intended.) - In
E2, type "Expanded Paraphrase as JSON" as the new header.
Get the spreadsheet ID
- Now you'll need to save the Google spreadsheet
ID. This will be used to generate the JSON within the Google environment. (The Google sheet URL, which is likely already stored, will be used to extract the JSON into the Resource Site.) - From the URL, copy the link starting from after /d until before the /edit?, e.g. https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/

Save the spreadsheet ID
(This step can be skipped if you'll only ever manuallly populate this; this goal permits us to bulk populate all discourse spreadsheets.)
- Edit the base Psalm page, e.g.
Psalm 1099 - Add the
DiscourseSheetIDproperty like this:
{{ResourceSite
|DiscourseSheetID=109Ni8QMdjRtxVFj_eAcSD109kgnWmoNTLMZy0zvykIT8ku0
|DiscourseSheet=2PACX-109vS309bCf4RkDjHEczGiDnZtOACqV94-DLwI_bYlzt5hugBM25ddPLVwaRETsZ9SyB46-7SpcGm3U8bX/pub?gid=7021094109086
}}
Populate the Public-Text sheet
- Actually extract the bold & italics from the main sheet into the Public-Text sheet. This involves running an Apps Script. First open this: https://script.google.com/u/0/home/projects/1097TAMP109KpcaMTXBf5qS0C-mflnt-109srgJTWns6bLRD_l6eNSj9zy4Bxzc/edit.
- Now add your discourse sheet id to the end of the list of spreadsheetIDs at the top, remembering to enclose it in double quotation marks and ensuring everything is comma-delimited.
- At the top of the page, ensure "extractBoldFromMultipleSpreadsheets" is in the menu bar.
- Click
Run. - If the Execution Log at the bottom of the page doesn't show "Execution started" and then "Execution completed" then ask Elizabeth for help...

1 | For the director. By David. A psalm. God whom I praise, do not stay silent! |
| כִּי פִי רָשָׁע וּֽפִי־מִרְמָה עָלַי פָּתָחוּ דִּבְּרוּ אִתִּי לְשׁוֹן שָֽׁקֶר׃ | 2 | For they have opened their wicked and deceitful mouths against me. They have spoken with me with lying tongues. |
3 | And they have surrounded me with hateful words, and they have fought against me for no reason. |
4 | In exchange for my love they accuse me —though I am devoted to prayer— |
5 | and they give me wrong in exchange for good and hate in exchange for my love. |
6 | Appoint a wicked person against him, and may an accuser stand at his right! |
7 | When he is judged, may he come away guilty, and may his prayer become a sin! |
8 | May his days be few! May someone else take his position! |
9 | May his children become fatherless, and his wife [become] a widow! |
10 | And may his children aimlessly wander from their ruins and beg and plead! |
11 | May a lender seize everything belonging to him, and may strangers plunder the fruits of his labor! |
12 | May he have no one to maintain loyalty, and may his fatherless children have no one to show them mercy! |
13 | May his posterity be doomed to destruction! May their name be wiped out in the next generation! |
14 | May his ancestors' iniquities be brought to YHWH's remembrance, and may his mother's sin not be wiped away! |
15 | May they always be before YHWH, so that he destroys their memory from the earth! |
| יַעַן אֲשֶׁר ׀ לֹא זָכַר עֲשׂוֹת חָסֶד וַיִּרְדֹּף אִישׁ־עָנִי וְאֶבְיוֹן וְנִכְאֵה לֵבָב לְמוֹתֵֽת׃ | 16 | Because he was not mindful to show loyalty, and he persecuted someone afflicted and poor and disheartened to finish him off. |
| וַיֶּאֱהַב קְלָלָה *וּתְבוֹאֵהוּ* וְֽלֹא־חָפֵץ בִּבְרָכָה *וְתִרְחַק* מִמֶּֽנּוּ׃ | 17 | And he loves cursing, and so it will come upon him, and he takes no pleasure in blessing, and so it will stay far from him. |
| וַיִּלְבַּשׁ קְלָלָה כְּמַדּוֹ וַתָּבֹא כַמַּיִם בְּקִרְבּוֹ וְכַשֶּׁמֶן בְּעַצְמוֹתָֽיו׃ | 18 | And he put on a curse like his garment, and it went inside him like water and into his body like oil. |
19 | May it be for him like clothes [that] he wears, and [may it become] a belt [that] he always puts on! |
20 | This is what my accusers, those who speak evil against me, have earned from YHWH. |
| וְאַתָּה ׀ יְהוִה אֲדֹנָי עֲֽשֵׂה־אִתִּי לְמַעַן שְׁמֶךָ כִּי־טוֹב חַסְדְּךָ הַצִּילֵֽנִי׃ | 21 | But you, YHWH, Lord, take action for me, for the sake of your name! Because your loyalty is good, rescue me! |
22 | For I am afflicted and poor, and my heart is in anguish inside me. |
23 | Like a shadow when it is stretched out, I have faded. I have been shaken off like a locust. |
24 | My knees have faltered from fasting, and my body has become gaunt, without any fat. |
25 | And I have become an object of scorn to them. When they see me, they shake their heads. |
26 | Help me, YHWH, my God! Save me according to your loyalty, |
27 | so that they know that this is your doing; [that] you, YHWH, have done it. |
But you will bless. Those who have risen up against me will come to shame, but your servant will rejoice. |
29 | My accusers will be clothed in dishonor and wear their shame like a robe. |
30 | I will fully acknowledge YHWH with my mouth, and I will praise him in the midst of many people. |
31 | For he stands at a poor person's right, to save him from those who condemn him to death. |
