Build Expanded Paraphrase

Click within the CBC to insert an expansion. A textbox will appear. Type in (or copy into) the textbox and push ESC to cancel or ENTER to save.

Alternatively, you may edit the CBC/insertions alternation directly at Data/29/expanded-paraphrase.json for a final draft. If you're viewing a paraphrase from the wiki, save it as a draft and then modify.

If there is an extra space between two parts...

, you'll need to modify the json file directly. For example, to enable plots:

	{
		"verse": "1",
		"cbc": "plot",
		"Index": 6,
		"suppressFollowingSpace": true
	},
	{
		"verse": "1",
		"insertion": "s",
		"WordsBefore": 6,
		"Index": 7
	},

If a Google discourse sheet exists...

You may import the Expanded Paraphrase from the sheet by following these instructions.

Prepare the discourse sheet

  1. Open the Discourse Google sheet for this Psalm.
  2. Go to the tab named "Public-Text" (which is likely already made). If it doesn't exist, follow these instructions (you'll need it all by the end of this).

Prepare

To enable this, you must:

  1. Open the Discourse Google sheet for this Psalm.
  2. Add a new tab named "Public-Text" (the name isn't actually critical)
  3. Use as the formula in the top-left cell: ='Discourse Master Sheet'!A:A (or whatever the appropriate code is to select the first column of the master sheet).
  4. Drag the formula over to Column C and down as far as needed to get all the rows.
  5. File > Share > Publish to Web
  6. Instead of Entire Document, choose sheet Public-Text
  7. Instead of Web Page, choose Tab-separated values.
  8. Copy the link starting from after /d/e until before the &single, e.g. https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/e/2PACX-1vTeE2dD9gc2v4rckm23VfBCDdpuLirI3DOxLQE10a2UHWl3puz8wPPCJ2wgBftP4VYqadCPb2pWOUwi/pub?gid=168152279&single=true&output=tsv
  9. Edit the base Psalm page, e.g. Psalm 19
  10. Add the DiscourseSheet property like this:
{{ResourceSite
|DiscourseSheet=2PACX-1vTeE2dD9gc2v4rckm23VfBCDdpuLirI3DOxLQE10a2UHWl3puz8wPPCJ2wgBftP4VYqadCPb2pWOUwi/pub?gid=168152279
|Banner Image=Psalm 19 banner image.jpg
  1. In D2, type "Expanded Paraphrase" as the new header. (This, like the one below, will be used by code to ensure this is what is intended.)
  2. In E2, type "Expanded Paraphrase as JSON" as the new header.

Get the spreadsheet ID

  1. Now you'll need to save the Google spreadsheet ID. This will be used to generate the JSON within the Google environment. (The Google sheet URL, which is likely already stored, will be used to extract the JSON into the Resource Site.)
  2. From the URL, copy the link starting from after /d until before the /edit?, e.g. https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/29Ni8QMdjRtxVFj_eAcSD29kgnWmoNTLMZy0zvykIT8ku0/edit?gid=70229429086#gid=70229429086

Save the spreadsheet ID

(This step can be skipped if you'll only ever manuallly populate this; this goal permits us to bulk populate all discourse spreadsheets.)

  1. Edit the base Psalm page, e.g. Psalm 299
  2. Add the DiscourseSheetID property like this:
{{ResourceSite
|DiscourseSheetID=29Ni8QMdjRtxVFj_eAcSD29kgnWmoNTLMZy0zvykIT8ku0
|DiscourseSheet=2PACX-29vS309bCf4RkDjHEczGiDnZtOACqV94-DLwI_bYlzt5hugBM25ddPLVwaRETsZ9SyB46-7SpcGm3U8bX/pub?gid=70229429086
}}

Populate the Public-Text sheet

  1. Actually extract the bold & italics from the main sheet into the Public-Text sheet. This involves running an Apps Script. First open this: https://script.google.com/u/0/home/projects/297TAMP29KpcaMTXBf5qS0C-mflnt-29srgJTWns6bLRD_l6eNSj9zy4Bxzc/edit.
  2. Now add your discourse sheet id to the end of the list of spreadsheetIDs at the top, remembering to enclose it in double quotation marks and ensuring everything is comma-delimited.
  3. At the top of the page, ensure "extractBoldFromMultipleSpreadsheets" is in the menu bar.
  4. Click Run.
  5. If the Execution Log at the bottom of the page doesn't show "Execution started" and then "Execution completed" then ask Elizabeth for help...

Extract the Public-Text sheet to the Resource Site

Follow the above instructions and refresh the page. The Discourse Sheet properties have not yet been set.

Use the Save current draft button at the bottom of the page to save.

Text (Hebrew) Verse Expanded Paraphrase
1 We have won a military victory over our enemy, who serves other gods, and the victory of one people over another implies the victory of their god(s) over the god(s) of the enemy. And so I say to the 'gods' whom YHWH has defeated: Ascribe to YHWH, divine beings (the victory he has won over you)! Ascribe to YHWH glory and strength!
2 Ascribe to YHWH the glory that his name deserves! Bowing down is a gesture of submission to a superior, and you divine beings have been shown to be inferior to YHWH. So, Bow down to YHWH, dressed in holy attire like priests and Levites who wear holy attire and whose job it is to serve YHWH. You divine beings now have to serve YHWH who defeated you. YHWH's victory over our enemy may be described in terms of YHWH's ancient victory over the waters of the Flood...
3 I hear The sound of YHWH against the water which is a symbol of chaos and danger and is sometimes used to represent human enemies! The glorious God has thundered. YHWH has thundered against many waters. In the Flood, the waters threatened the divinely ordered world, but YHWH appeared in power and glory to bring salvation and restore order. At his thunderous rebuke, the waters fled in fearful haste and YHWH's people were safe. In the same way, YHWH has thundered against our enemies, and they have fled.
4 I hear The sound of YHWH (thundering) in power! I hear The sound of YHWH (thundering) in majesty.
5 It is well known that, after defeating his enemies, a god would build a temple/palace to dwell with and rule over his people. For example, after Baal was said to have defeated the Sea, he built a temple/palace. Now that YHWH has defeated the chaotic waters, he is building a heavenly temple as a symbol of his dominion. I hear The sound of YHWH breaking cedars a symbol of loftiness and grandeur to use in the construction of his temple, and YHWH is breaking the cedars of Lebanon which were used in the construction of temples, including Baal's and YHWH's
6 and he with his thunderous voice is causing Lebanon the mountain range on which the cedars are located, which is thought to be the home of many gods to skip in fear like a calf, and (he causes) Sirion also known as Mt. Hermon, which lies just to the east of the Lebanon mountain range and which is also thought to be a dwelling place of gods (to skip) in fear like a wild ox. YHWH is greater than the gods in Lebanon and Sirion, and he is forcing them to serve him by yielding materials for his temple.
7 Temples require stone as well as wood, and people hew stone in the mountains. I hear The sound of YHWH hewing stone in the mountains of Lebanon and Sirion, not with a pick-axe, but with lightning bolts. in order to construct his temple.
8 As he breaks cedars and mines stone with blasts of thunder and lightning YHWH's thunderous voice causes the wilderness the uninhabited place where wood and stone are gathered to tremble in fear. YHWH causes the wilderness of Kadesh an area near Lebanon and Sirion which, like Lebanon and Sirion, may be associated with other gods to tremble in fear thereby demonstrating YHWH's superiority over other gods and nature.
9 YHWH's thunderous voice causes fallow deer which are in the wilderness to go into labour and give birth and YHWH's voice strips the leaves off of trees in the forests, and in his newly constructed temple everyone i.e., all of the divine beings who serve him is saying,"YHWH deserves all Glory!"
10 In his newly built heavenly temple, YHWH sat enthroned over the Flood, and just as he sat enthroned then, so YHWH sits enthroned still today as king forever and he has once again demonstrated his strength by defeating our enemies and their 'gods.'
11 YHWH who dwells in his temple with his people gives strength to his people so that they have victory in battle. YHWH defeats the enemies of his people, just as he defeated the chaotic waters in the days of Noah, and thus he blesses his people with peace.
