Build Expanded Paraphrase

Click within the CBC to insert an expansion. A textbox will appear. Type in (or copy into) the textbox and push ESC to cancel or ENTER to save.

Alternatively, you may edit the CBC/insertions alternation directly at Data/100/expanded-paraphrase.json for a final draft. If you're viewing a paraphrase from the wiki, save it as a draft and then modify.

If there is an extra space between two parts...

, you'll need to modify the json file directly. For example, to enable plots:

	{
		"verse": "1",
		"cbc": "plot",
		"Index": 6,
		"suppressFollowingSpace": true
	},
	{
		"verse": "1",
		"insertion": "s",
		"WordsBefore": 6,
		"Index": 7
	},

If a Google discourse sheet exists...

You may import the Expanded Paraphrase from the sheet by following these instructions.

Prepare the discourse sheet

  1. Open the Discourse Google sheet for this Psalm.
  2. Go to the tab named "Public-Text" (which is likely already made). If it doesn't exist, follow these instructions (you'll need it all by the end of this).

Prepare

To enable this, you must:

  1. Open the Discourse Google sheet for this Psalm.
  2. Add a new tab named "Public-Text" (the name isn't actually critical)
  3. Use as the formula in the top-left cell: ='Discourse Master Sheet'!A:A (or whatever the appropriate code is to select the first column of the master sheet).
  4. Drag the formula over to Column C and down as far as needed to get all the rows.
  5. File > Share > Publish to Web
  6. Instead of Entire Document, choose sheet Public-Text
  7. Instead of Web Page, choose Tab-separated values.
  8. Copy the link starting from after /d/e until before the &single, e.g. https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/e/2PACX-1vTeE2dD9gc2v4rckm23VfBCDdpuLirI3DOxLQE10a2UHWl3puz8wPPCJ2wgBftP4VYqadCPb2pWOUwi/pub?gid=168152279&single=true&output=tsv
  9. Edit the base Psalm page, e.g. Psalm 19
  10. Add the DiscourseSheet property like this:
{{ResourceSite
|DiscourseSheet=2PACX-1vTeE2dD9gc2v4rckm23VfBCDdpuLirI3DOxLQE10a2UHWl3puz8wPPCJ2wgBftP4VYqadCPb2pWOUwi/pub?gid=168152279
|Banner Image=Psalm 19 banner image.jpg
  1. In D2, type "Expanded Paraphrase" as the new header. (This, like the one below, will be used by code to ensure this is what is intended.)
  2. In E2, type "Expanded Paraphrase as JSON" as the new header.

Get the spreadsheet ID

  1. Now you'll need to save the Google spreadsheet ID. This will be used to generate the JSON within the Google environment. (The Google sheet URL, which is likely already stored, will be used to extract the JSON into the Resource Site.)
  2. From the URL, copy the link starting from after /d until before the /edit?, e.g. https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/100Ni8QMdjRtxVFj_eAcSD100kgnWmoNTLMZy0zvykIT8ku0/edit?gid=7021004100086#gid=7021004100086

Save the spreadsheet ID

(This step can be skipped if you'll only ever manuallly populate this; this goal permits us to bulk populate all discourse spreadsheets.)

  1. Edit the base Psalm page, e.g. Psalm 1009
  2. Add the DiscourseSheetID property like this:
{{ResourceSite
|DiscourseSheetID=100Ni8QMdjRtxVFj_eAcSD100kgnWmoNTLMZy0zvykIT8ku0
|DiscourseSheet=2PACX-100vS309bCf4RkDjHEczGiDnZtOACqV94-DLwI_bYlzt5hugBM25ddPLVwaRETsZ9SyB46-7SpcGm3U8bX/pub?gid=7021004100086
}}

Populate the Public-Text sheet

  1. Actually extract the bold & italics from the main sheet into the Public-Text sheet. This involves running an Apps Script. First open this: https://script.google.com/u/0/home/projects/1007TAMP100KpcaMTXBf5qS0C-mflnt-100srgJTWns6bLRD_l6eNSj9zy4Bxzc/edit.
  2. Now add your discourse sheet id to the end of the list of spreadsheetIDs at the top, remembering to enclose it in double quotation marks and ensuring everything is comma-delimited.
  3. At the top of the page, ensure "extractBoldFromMultipleSpreadsheets" is in the menu bar.
  4. Click Run.
  5. If the Execution Log at the bottom of the page doesn't show "Execution started" and then "Execution completed" then ask Elizabeth for help...

Extract the Public-Text sheet to the Resource Site

Text (Hebrew) Verse Expanded Paraphrase
1 After the common pattern of facing danger, crying out to YHWH, and being helped by YHWH, the people of Israel went up to Jerusalem, to the temple, for a thanksgiving ceremony, including joyful songs of thanksgiving and praise and the presentation of a thank offering on the altar. The crowd, including the people, priests, and perhaps a leader or king, gathered outside the gates and began the ceremony with A psalm for a thank offering. A leader, perhaps a priest, begins by calling out to the great crowd,"Shout joyfully to YHWH in order to celebrate his kingship, all the earth! For his help and rescue demonstrates his good character, which is reason for not only Israel, but all the earth to praise him.
2 Serve YHWH with joy in a posture of obedience to YHWH which comes not from fear but joyful service to a good and loyal master, who can be counted on to help his servants when trouble comes! All you gathered outside of YHWH's house and presence to give thanks, Enter before him into his house and his presence, to begin the thanksgiving ceremony with exultation to honor his rescue and give him the praise owed him by his people, when he cares for them!
3 But before entering to give thanks, let us establish the foundation of all our thanksgiving, beginning with a call to Acknowledge that YHWH, he and no other, none of the gods of the other nations who might compete, is God, the creator of all things. When he helped and rescued us, he showed himself superior over all other gods and powers! He this great supreme God, made us, calling, redeeming, and forming us as a nation for himself, and therefore we are his, rightfully belonging to him, his people and the flock of his pasture whom he shepherds and cares for.
4 He is our God and we are his people! We belong to him! With this foundation in mind, let us celebrate and give thanks for his help and rescue, as we Enter his gates with thanksgiving, his courts where his presence is most experienced with praise. Give thanks to him with joyful songs of thanksgiving and a thank-offering on the altar! Bless his name speaking well of him and celebrating his character,
5 invoking the phrase associated with thank offerings: for YHWH is good to his people, Israel, his loyalty to his people, Israel is forever, and his faithfulness to his people, Israel continues through generation after generation." The people then enter through the gates and into the temple courts and a thank-offering is offered on the altar, accompanied by joyful songs of thanksgiving and praise.
