Back to Psalm 22
Overview
There are five participants/characters in Psalm 29:
- David
- ancestors
- enemy (בְּנֵי אֵלִים)
- YHWH
- righteous
- future generations
Participant Relations
The relationships among the participants may be abstracted and summarised as follows:
- David calls out to, relies on and praises YHWH, who, although he had placed David in danger, rescues him, so that David can praise YHWH in the midst of those who fear him, and invite them, too, to praise. They honour and worship him who does not despise their affliction but hears when they call upon him, so that the nations hear their praise and will tell it even to future generations.
- David and the afflicted call out to, rely on and praise YHWH, because he does not despise their affliction, but rather answers them, and after placing David in danger, rescues him, whose enemies, not only mock him in his suffering, but surround him, threaten him and anticipate his death.
