Word Gloss Ref.
רוּחַ "wind" Ps. 1:4

Ancient Setting

"In the land of Israel the wind normally begins to blow about two o'clock in the afternoon and continues through the evening and into the night."[1]

Imagery

  • In Psalm 1, the image of wind appears alongside the image of chaff. The wicked are "like chaff that the wind (רוּחַ) blows away (נדף)." During the winnowing process a mixture of grain, chaff, straw, and dust is thrown into the wind. The wind blows away much of the unwanted chaff, straw, and dust.[2]
