שֵׁבֶט "rod" Ps. 2:9

Ancient Setting

In the Psalms

  • In Psalm 2, Israel's king is depicted as wielding an iron rod with which to crush the nations. If, however, the LXX reading of Ps. 2:9 is accepted, then the rod imagery is connected to the metaphor of the king as a shepherd. Whereas a shepherd usually carried a wooden rod, Israel's king is said to carry a rod made of iron.
