How long, YHWH?

Introduction

Overview

Purpose: To ask God to see the psalmist's suffering and rescue him.

Content: YHWH, give light to my eyes! Lest I sleep in death, lest my enemy says: "I'm the victor!"

Message: Suffering does not change the psalmist's covenant relationship with God, so he can still call on God with confidence.

Background Ideas

  • The question "How long? signals lament. It it not really a question, but rather, in speech act terms, an expressive. Similar expressions are known from ancient Mesopotamia, often in prayers for healing.
  • Sickness was viewed as just as dire a situation as a battle wound, brought on by men's curses and overcome by YHWH's compassion.
  • The expression "to hide one's face" is used several times in the Psalms, in the sense of turning a blind eye to the suffering of the innocent (Pss 10:11; 13:2; 22:25; 27:9; 30:8; 44:25; 51:11; 69:18; 88:15; 102:3; 104:29 (obj.: animals); 143:7).
  • YHWH promised to David that:
    • he would one day be king (1 Sam 16:1, 12),
    • his house and kingdom would be established forever (2 Sam 7:16).

Translation Aids

Recommended steps for translating the psalms

To translate poetry accurately and beautifully, a knowledge of both the source language's poetry and the target language's poetry is needed. So, here are the steps we recommend to follow when setting out to translate the psalms:

  1. GAIN AN UNDERSTANDING OF THE TARGET LANGUAGE'S POETRY/ARTS. Research and analyze many examples from numerous genres of poetry, storytelling, and music in the target language and culture, and document findings. See our for help.
  2. GAIN AN UNDERSTANDING OF THE SOURCE LANGUAGE'S (HEBREW) MEANING AND POETRY. The aim of all our materials is to provide exactly this for the translator, poet/musician/artist, and consultant: an understanding of what the psalm means, as well as its poetics.
  3. TRANSLATE THE PSALM IN THE APPROPRIATE LOCAL ART/POETRY GENRE.

Translation and Performance Notes

TPNs are an at-a-glance reference for anyone involved with translating or checking a translation of the psalm. Specific words, phrases, and images that could be difficult to understand or to translate are highlighted, and then briefly discussed. Each note is intended to help the reader understand the meaning of the Hebrew word or phrase in its context, as well as provide a few translation options or suggestions, often pulling from existing translations. Where pertinent, our preferred translation option is given. NOTE: These notes are intended to supplement a robust internalization of the psalm, not replace it. Close-but-Clear Translation

1. For the director. A psalm by David.
2. How long, YHWH? Will you ignore me forever?
How long will you hide your face from me?
3. How long will I make futile plans?
[How long] will sorrow be daily in my heart?
How long will my enemy be exalted over me?
4. Consider! Answer me, YHWH my God!
Give light to my eyes, lest I sleep in death,
5. lest my enemy say, ‘I have overpowered him!’
[lest] my adversaries rejoice because I am shaken.
6. But I have put my trust in your loyalty.
Let my heart rejoice because of your salvation!
I will sing to YHWH, because he has repaid me!
