  • The terms anger (אַף) and wrath (חֵמָה) are near synonyms; it is difficult to discern the difference in meaning.[1] Both terms refer to a "state of extreme displeasure" or "excitement" (SDBH), and both are associated with fire and heat. The second word "wrath" (חֵמָה) is slightly less common, and, given the tendency of Hebrew poetry to use more intense language in the b-line of a poetic couplet, might indicate a more intense form of anger.
