1.1 | For the music director. A psalm. By David. |
2.1 | When Nathan the prophet came to him, |
2.2 | when he had had sexual intercourse with Bathsheba. |
3.1 | Show mercy to me, God, according to your loyalty; |
3.2 | according to your abundant compassion wipe away my transgressions. |
4.1 | Wash me thoroughly from my iniquity, |
4.2 | and cleanse me from my sin, |
5.1 | because I am [continually] aware of my transgressions, |
5.2 | and my sin is constantly in front of me. |
6.1 | Against you alone I have sinned, |
6.2 | and I have done what is evil in your eyes, |
6.3 | such that you are in the right whenever you speak, |
6.4 | [and such that] you are faultless whenever you judge. |
7.1 | Look, I was born in iniquity, |
7.2 | and in guilt my mother conceived me. |
8.1 | Look, you desire truth in the covered places, |
8.2 | and you make me know wisdom in the closed-off place. |
9.1 | [Would you please] purify me with hyssop, so that I will be clean; |
9.2 | [would you please] wash me, so that I will be whiter than snow. |
10.1 | [Would you please] make me hear gladness and joy; |
10.2 | [so that] the bones that you have crushed might rejoice. |
11.1 | Hide your face from my sins, |
11.2 | and wipe away all my iniquities. |
12.1 | Create a clean heart for me, God, |
12.2 | and renew a steadfast spirit within me. |
13.1 | Do not cast me away from before you, |
13.2 | and do not take your holy spirit away from me. |
14.1 | Restore to me the gladness that results from your salvation, |
14.2 | and [would you please] support me with a willing spirit. |
15.1 | I intend to teach transgressors your ways, |
15.2 | so that sinners will turn back to you. |
16.1 | Deliver me from bloodshed, God, |
16.2 | the God who saves me, |
16.3 | [so that] my tongue will shout for joy about your righteousness. |
17.1 | Lord, [would you please] open my lips, |
17.2 | so that my mouth will report praise concerning you. |
18.1 | For you do not delight in sacrifice[s], |
18.2 | or else I would give [them]; |
18.3 | you are not pleased with burnt offering[s]. |
19.1 | The sacrifices [acceptable to] God are broken spirit[s]; |
19.2 | a broken and crushed heart, |
19.3 | God, you do not despise. |
20.1 | Do good to Zion in accord with what pleases you; |
20.2 | [would you please] build the walls of Jerusalem. |
21.1 | Then you will delight in right sacrifices, in burnt offering[s] and whole offering[s]; |
21.2 | then [people] will offer up bulls on your altar. |
