1a
For the music director. By the Korahites. A Psalm.
2a
Hear this, all peoples.
2b
Give ear, all the inhabitants of the world;
3a
both low and mighty,
3b
rich and poor alike.
4a
My mouth will speak great wisdom;
4b
the meditation of my heart will utter great discernment.
5a
I will incline my ear to a proverb;
5b
I will explain my riddle with the lyre.
6a
Why should I fear in evil days,
6b
whenever the iniquity of my persecutors surrounds me,
7a
those who trust in their wealth
7b
and who boast in the abundance of their riches?
8a
No, a person can not by any means redeem himself.
8b
He can not offer a ransom to God for himself.
9a
(For the ransom for his life is costly.
9b
And it cannot ever be achieved)
10a
that he should live forever
10b
and not see the pit.
11a
For that individual sees that the wise die;
11b
that the fool and brutish alike perish
11c
and leave their wealth to others.
12a
Their graves are their houses for eternity,
12b
their dwelling places from generation to generation,
12c
although they have named lands with their names.
13a
But even an individual in honor cannot remain alive.
13b
He is the same as animals who have perished.
14a
This is the way of those who have foolish confidence
14b
and those after them who approve [of them] with their words. Selah
15a
Like a flock they have been appointed for Sheol;
15b
death shepherds them;
15c
the upright dominate them when the morning approaches.
15d
Their form is for Sheol to consume, away from their lofty habitation.
16a
But God will redeem my soul,
16b
from the power of Sheol he will surely take me. Selah
17a
Do not fear when another person becomes rich,
17b
when the wealth of his house increases.
18a
For he will not take anything (with him), when he dies.
18b
His wealth will not go down after him.
19a
Though in his life, he blesses himself
19b
—and they praise you when you do well for yourself—
20a
he will go to the generation of his ancestors,
20b
who will never see light.
21a
An individual who is in honor yet can not understand
21b
is the same as animals who have perished.
