1.1 | For the director. By the Korahites. A maskil. |
2.1 | God, we have heard [it] with our ears— |
2.2 | Our ancestors have recounted to us the deeds |
2.3 | which you did in their times—in times long ago |
3.1 | You, by your strength, dispossessed nations, |
3.2 | and then you planted them. |
3.3 | You would afflict the people groups, |
3.4 | and then you would set them free. |
4.1 | For they did not take possession of the land by means of their sword; |
4.2 | nor did their power give victory for them. |
4.3 | But rather your right hand, and your power, and the light of your countenance [gave the victory]; |
4.4 | for you were pleased with them. |
5.1 | You are my king, my God, |
5.2 | commanding victory for Jacob! |
6.1 | With you, we can gore our adversaries; |
6.2 | under your authority, we can tread down our enemies. |
7.1 | Indeed, I cannot trust in my bow, |
7.2 | nor can my sword give me victory. |
8.1 | But rather you delivered us from our adversaries; |
8.2 | and you put our enemies to shame. |
9.1 | We have been boasting in God all day long, |
9.2 | and we will keep declaring your name forever. Selah. |
10.1 | Even so, you have rejected [us]— |
10.2 | that is, you have put us to shame. |
10.3 | And you do not go forth with our armies. |
11.1 | You make us retreat before the adversary, |
11.2 | and our enemies have plundered for themselves. |
12.1 | You give us up as sheep for consumption, |
12.2 | and you have scattered us among the nations. |
13.1 | You sell your people without compensation, |
13.2 | and you have not made a profit by them. |
14.1 | You turn us into an object of scorn to our neighbors— |
14.2 | An object of scornful derision to those who surround us. |
15.1 | You turn us into a parable among the nations— |
15.2 | An object of pity among the people groups. |
16.1 | All day long, my shame is before me, |
| וּבֹשֶׁת פָּנַי כִּסָּתְנִי מִקּוֹל מְחָרֵף וּמְגַדֵּף מִפְּנֵי אוֹיֵב וּמִתְנַקֵּם | 17.1 | and my shamefacedness has covered me, because of the voice of the reviling taunter, because of the vengeful enemy. |
18.1 | All this has come upon us, |
18.2 | even though we have not neglected you; |
18.3 | Nor have we broken faith with your covenant. |
19.1 | Our heart has not backslid— |
19.2 | that is, our steps have not deviated from your path. |
20.1 | Yet you have crushed us in the place of jackals, |
20.2 | and thus you have covered us with deepest shadow. |
21.1 | If we have neglected our God's name— |
21.2 | that is, if we had spread our palms in prayer to another god— |
22.1 | could not God investigate this, |
22.2 | since he knows the heart's secrets? |
23.1 | Yet we have been killed because of you all day long. |
23.2 | We are considered as sheep to be slaughtered. |
24.1 | Awake! |
24.2 | Why do you sleep, Lord? |
24.3 | Wake up! |
24.4 | Do not keep rejecting [us] forever! |
25.1 | Why are you hiding your countenance? |
25.2 | Why are you neglecting our affliction and oppression? |
26.1 | For our soul has sunk down into the dust; |
26.2 | our belly clings to the earth. |
27.1 | Arise to our aid, |
27.2 | and redeem us because of your faithfulness! |
