Semantics

Semantics is the study of how language is used to represent meaning. The goal of semantic analysis is to understand the meaning of words and how they relate to each other in context.

  • Grammar & Semantics: Our semantic analysis consists of the following sub-layers:

    • Grammar & Textual Criticism
    • Lexical Semantics
    • Phrase-Level Semantics
    • Verbal Semantics
  • Story Behind the Psalm: The capstone of our semantic analysis, Story Behind the Psalm analyzes the meaning of sentences and larger units of discourse, up to and including the entire psalm. This also include historical background and figurative imagery.

Discourse

Our Discourse Layer moves beyond semantic-level meaning, and analyzes features of the text dependent on the speaker, addressee, and macrosyntax.

  • Participant Analysis: This layer looks at the relational roles of the psalm's participants (e.g., speakers, addressees, subject/predicate agents).
  • Macrosyntax: This layer analyzes syntactic features above the sentence level, in terms of conjunctions, asyndesis, discourse markers, and information flow.
  • Speech Act Analysis: This layer examines the acts performed by the speaker when making an utterance.
  • Emotional Analysis: The goal of this layer is to chart out the basic emotional tone and/or progression of the psalm.

Poetics

Our Poetics Layer examines the aesthetic and structural features of Hebrew poetry. Exploring the Psalms as poetry is crucial for understanding and experiencing the psalms, and thus for faithfully translating them into another language.

  • Poetic Structure: The goal of this analysis is to examine the line structure of the psalm, and then synthesize data from previous layers to identify the poetic structure of the poem.
  • Poetic Features: This layer presents the top three features of intentional design that shape and reflect the message of the psalm.

Synthesis

The Synthesis Layer brings together the findings of preceding layers, and presents the most important information in a concise format.

  • Verse by Verse: The notes and visuals for Verse-by-Verse Notes represent a compilation of material from previous layers, providing the preferred interpretation in a concise format.
  • Prominence: Prominence is the mechanism that enables us to identify the figure against the ground in a text. This layer examines aesthetic, pragmatic, and semantic features that contribute to prominence in the psalm.
