  • The following words of verse 4cd are absent in the Peshitta: כְּמַעֲשֵׂ֣ה יְ֭דֵיהֶם תֵּ֣ן לָהֶ֑ם הָשֵׁ֖ב גְּמוּלָ֣ם לָהֶֽם perhaps due to haplography.[1]
  • The Greek, the Targum, and some Hebrew manuscripts read the MT כְּמַעֲשֵׂ֣ה ("work") as a plural (כְּמַעֲשֵׂי - "works." Cf. Kennicott 139 and 173: כמעשי) both here and in verse 5. There is a tendency in the tradition to change the singular מַעֲשֵׂ֣ה to מַעֲשֵׂי. For instance, 11Q5 does this very frequently, as do other witnesses. Nevertheless, we preserve the MT reading. The yod was more likely to be added than omitted. Moreover, 4QPsc supports the singular reading which is reflected in modern translations.[2]
  1. Cf. Jacobson and Tanner 2014, 274.
  2. E.g.: ESV: "work of their hands;" JPS, 1985: "according to their handiwork;" etc.
