Agricultural Model
From Psalms: Layer by Layer
Introduction
Agricultural Idealised Cognitive Model is reflected in several places in the Psalms.
The idea of “ causation” refers to when someone or something takes the necessary steps to move a process from start to finish and get a result. The results of a causal process can be good or bad. In some ways, agriculture involves a causal process because farmers take the necessary steps in their control to make sure plants grow. But farmers cannot control all the factors that cause plants to grow and they do not literally cause growth.
Cultural Background
- One must plow farmland to prepare it for planting. Ground that is not prepared is hard and seeds will not grow in it.
- Farmers sow seeds and plant crops to have harvests.
- Some food can grows wild without being planted or tended by peopleof itself (Lev. 25.11)
- Some seeds are sown by is scattering them on the grounded; other seeds areis planted in rows (Isa. 28.25)
- Crops need irrigation so farmers must live near a source of water. Proximity to water is required for agriculture (Isa. 32.20)
- When fields are not planted for a season, the ground becomes hard. (Jer. 4:3) Ground is left to lie fallow (Jer. 4.3), where it becomes hard.
- The farmer assumes he will be able to eat what he plants and his own harvests.
